Our Services: Multidisciplinary Care

Caring for children and adults with congenital heart disease requires a multidisciplinary effort. Each of the above clinical services has dedicated teams of doctors, nurses, and technicians who are specifically trained and experienced to meet the unique clinical needs of congenital heart patients. The Congenital Heart Team meets every Monday morning at 6:00 AM to discuss the scheduled surgical and catheter-based procedures for the week. A detailed, clinical biography is constructed for each patient and distributed to the team to ensure that all relevant clinical information is known. The patient’s previous diagnostic studies (echocardiogram, electrocardiogram, MRI, angiogram etc.) are shown at conference and the appropriate preoperative, intra-operative, and postoperative care is discussed. Each service brings its expertise and perspective on each case, which ensures not only a thoughtful approach, but a cohesive and integrated effort for every cardiac surgery and cardiac catheterization.

This clinical conference also provides the opportunity to review the surgeries and catheterization procedures from the previous week. Such sharing of information is crucial for building cohesiveness as a multidisciplinary team with a united focus. Critically reviewing our outcomes has established a pride and a reaffirmed dedication to the team. More importantly, it allows us to honestly evaluate our outcomes and continue to find new and innovative ways to improve. Our focus is your child’s heart, and we are committed to ensuring the best possible care for the children and adults with congenital heart disease in Northern New England.
